Boulder CO - 2020 Subaru Outback's Overview

Exterior - 2020 Subaru Outback

The exterior of the new Outback is not the stark change you may expect from a new generation, but there is a good reason for that. Subaru has always remained true to the Outback's station wagon roots, and that has provided it a unique and popular design in an otherwise same-y marketplace. The wheelbase and high ground clearance are also similar to last year. The cargo volume is listed at a bit less than last year, but Subaru tells us that this is due to a change in how its measured. Using the old system, the new cargo is a tad bigger, and the Outback still features the wide, unobstructed opening, which makes it easy to load and unload. Premium provides the option of a powered liftgate and adds LED fog lights as well as color-matched side mirrors with built-in turn signals.

The 6.5-inch color touchscreen that was standard for the 2019 model has been replaced with a more modern 7.0-inch screen. An optional group for the base model includes an 11.6-inch screen along with a built-in navigation system and a DriverFocus system. This group is included with the Premium trim. A dual-zone automatic climate control system is standard across the lineup, and this system supports voice commands through the infotainment system. The Premium trim adds creature comforts, such as a power-adjustable driver's seat, heated front seats and leather wrapping for the steering wheel. Upgrade to the Limited for leather upholstery as well as a premium audio setup by Harman Kardon. Upper trims offer ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, upscale leather and a front-view monitor.

Subaru has been making its driver assistance suite standard across its entire lineup of vehicles. As it was configuring the 2019 Subaru Outback, the design of the new generation was already underway. It could have just waited, but did not. The base 2019 Outback included EyeSight, which provides adaptive cruise control as well as systems for avoiding front collisions and unintended lane departures. This means that nothing changes much on the safety front for the 2020 model year. The standard Outback gets EyeSight. The second-tier trim level adds a blind-spot monitoring system that includes rear cross-traffic detection and assistance for lane changes. The addition for this year is the optional DriverFocus system, which monitors the driver's attention and alerts you as necessary.
